Right now, Jay Worthy seems like one of California’s best kept secrets: he’s certainly become a musical gem via his LNDN DRGS imprint with Sean House, thanks to their soulful, nostalgic style of music. There’s also the fun fact that Pop star Grimes is his step-sister (while he was raised in Compton, he’s originally from Vancouver).
Now, he’s teamed up with legendary producer Alchemist for a brand-new project titled Fantasy Island, which is set to feature additional appearances from Rugotti, Conway, Meyhem Lauren, Ray Wright and more. Speaking to Billboard, Worthy explained how the collaboration came together:
The collaboration with me and Alchemist came about when I was in Vancouver going to check out the homie Meyhem Lauren’s show. We were both in that city. He was playing with Action Bronson and AL was DJ’ing… So, after the show, I’m backstage and Al approaches me and tells me he’s a fan and gave me props on my s***. I was shocked to be honest that he knew who I was. I had asked him how he had heard of my music and he said Earl Sweatshirt had put him on to it and he was rockin’ with it. So, from there, we chopped it up. [We] met back in L.A. and got to work. I feel like the whole project as a whole demonstrates the chemistry as we recorded the whole ep at Al’s… [We] really caught a vibe in there and mashed it out.
The first offerings out the gate from the 7-track EP were “Stepping Out” (which Worthy reveals originally saw a verse from Al) and — a quick favorite — “Boomerang,” which features Polo100 and a s***-talking Big Body Bes, true to form…the syrup-y, laid back cut also comes with a beach-set black-and-white visual.
