St. Paul, Minnesota’s Taylor J is ready to takeover the music game and he’s not letting anything or anyone get in his way. As the rapper prepares for the release of his debut album Who Would’ve Thought, which is set to release any moment now, he takes some time out of his hectic schedule to chat with us. Check out the RESPECT. interview below.
RESPECT.: Hey Taylor! I see your debut album is dropping very soon, how are you feeling about this major release?
Taylor J: Making an album is a different kind of focus and it’s on a different level. As far as my whole creative space, I have made a lot of personal adjustments before going into album mode. This first album is very important to me and I am at a point in my career where I know it’s the right time for an album.
RESPECT.: I see takeover is your motto but what does takeover actually mean to you?
Taylor J: Takeover in all aspects. Takeover with your personal life and takeover with your career. There’s a whole world out here. It’s here for us to do whatever we want to do and we have so much opportunity. Takeover is the attitude of me coming in and taking mine. As far as the music goes, I’m definitely the best and I feel like every situation I came into was takeover situation. Every new city and business, me and my team provide a new vibe and a new feel. I have a strong team behind me, we have been through a lot together.
RESPECT.: How long has the album been in the works?
Taylor J: Since January, but making this album wasn’t planned. Who Would’ve Thought was going to be another mixtape. I really don’t too much labeling as far as projects. I see everything as a body of work. Since I’ve been telling people that I’m working on an album, people are already taking it a different way. I really can’t wait. This sh*t is going to be big.
RESPECT.: The title, why did you decide on that name.
Taylor J: I’ve had so many situations happen in my life that people wouldn’t believe. Me and the team would just laugh at all the L’s and say to ourselves who would’ve thought that we’re still going to win.
RESPECT.: What are some of those situations if you don’t mind me asking.
Taylor J: Making the music is easy but working with people outside the team can be difficult. Its always a hassle to get people on the same page as you. Some people just might not be the same business person like you are. Also, we have been homeless, broke, and people have stolen from us. Who would’ve thought! That’s all I have to say.
RESPECT.: Can you describe how this project is different from the others?
Taylor J: For every project, I believe there is something I could’ve done better content wise. There’s things I could’ve talked about but I didn’t talk about. So many things I’ve went through if people knew in detail they would understand me more as an artist. Building connections with my fans is very important in this album as well. I’m bringing a lot of energy and detail.
RESPECT.: Aside from the album, is there anything else you’d like to share with your fans?
Taylor J: Me and Lex Luger are working on The 91 Family pt.2, more takeover hoodies and T-shirts coming soon, and I have a couple of pop-up shows here and there.
