While the Guardians of the Galaxy films perhaps started out as being not as well known or advertised as some of the other Marvel franchises, the sequel makes a surprisingly successful debut on its opening weekend.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2‘s opening weekend saw the sequel become 54 percent more successful than the original film, which premiered in 2014. While that release saw a $94 million opening weekend, Vol. 2 earned an estimated $145 million. While some of the other recent Marvel sequels have been met with less enthusiasm than the company might have hoped for, this last week’s premiere may have boosted the excitement in comic lovers for the Summer movie season. David Hollis, the distribution chief for Disney, said that, “The ambition here was to make something that was unbelievably fresh and exciting…as long as we can continue to deliver high-quality storytelling, high-quality world-creation, we’ll be in great shape.” So far, the sequel seems to be showing just that.
A third Guardians of the Galaxy movie has already been confirmed and is in its planning stages, as well as crossovers with various other Marvel characters and stories.
