Meet the curator and stylist taking the internet by storm with his sub-norm vintage baggy clothing looks that can be seen everywhere. Big Baggy Jesus is a California native who is paying homage to the era of baggy with an array of styles that include everything from Levi’s to Jnco’s. This stylist uses them all to make the ‘vintage 90’s skateboarder mall rat cool kid’ look official.
Big Baggy Jesus connects with others through his social media, which he has built into a solid core community of followers. He encourages many others to join the movement and upsize to the more baggy look that played a big part in the 90’s culture. As of recent, Big Baggy Jesus — as his many followers know him — is pushing the look forward and is not looking back at all. During a recent visit to NYC, I caught up with the rising curator and stylist to discuss the movement and what it all means.
RESPECT.: What’s up, it’s good to finally meet the person behind the BBJ. So hows NYC treating you so far?
Thank you for having me, it’s good to be out here. I really love New York, spent a lot of time out here in the past, I miss it. The cool thing about NY is the fashion, it’s more going on in baggy right now so it’s cool to come out and connect with like-minded people.
RESPECT.: Let’s start from the beginning: what were some of the things that motivated you to start pushing the baggy movement?
So basically just seeing all these skinny jeans out and that’s no disrespect to anybody but seeing it everywhere and seeing skinny jeans start to transcend generations, where u got grandparents dads and older kids all wearing skinny jeans (sighs). The younger generation doesn’t want to dress like their parents. I just saw this open space where I knew baggy was going to come in.

RESPECT.: The baggy movement is gaining heavy momentum on and off the internet more and more people are incorporating a big and baggy look to their everyday looks. What are some of the things you’re doing that is keeping the look so relevant?
Keeping it fun, building a community. People are putting my [social media] handle inside of their bio’s and tagging the picture Big Baggy Jesus so it’s a collaborative effort between me and the followers. But I make sure I keep delivering original content. As often as possible, I style and shoot my own looks either on myself or on others, always trying to style in such a way that it continues to inspire the movement.
RESPECT.: Eventually, will you begin to make your own Baggy pieces? If so, where are some of the places people would look to find BBJ clothing?
As of now, I mainly focus on curation and styling. Been lucky enough to collaborate with [Mariah Martinez], we just finished a project in San Francisco, you should be seeing that soon. Outside of that, I’m building a massive collection of vintage baggy. So right now I’m just collecting rare nostalgic pieces. Whether or not this transcends into something more down, I don’t know.

RESPECT.: Most of all, what are some of the things that inspire you the most as a curator and stylist as you continue to build the BBJ community?
I would say seeing the movement in mainly skateboarding, but also just youth in general like the homies and original BBJ apostles @gutsquisher, @babyrickraf and @rhi_eb posting super baggy fits, that was really my first cue. For the longest time, everyone was wearing slim or skinny, it became the norm. I just missed that counter-culture rebellion in fashion, so the resurgence of baggy, at least in my mind, at this moment is that return to that style parents hate. The fits that get banned at school.
RESPECT.: What are some of the things that have changed in your everyday life after starting the Big & Baggy movement?
I think the biggest change for me is having this base of like minded people that connect with. I didn’t have that in my personal life, so that’s been feeding my energy, keeping me inspired. Before all this I was a big time loner all in my own world; now I get to connect with people from all around the world, that would have otherwise been complete strangers. I feel very fortunate for that.

Respect: What can we look for from you in the future?
BIGGER pants haha. But really I just want to continue to build and connect with people, keep it grass roots and stay accessible to my supporters and followers. More photo shoots, the homie @pinkmotorazr should be working on a baggy skate vid this summer, he drops short clips in the feed on the regular. Outside of that, just a big thank you to you, the apostles, all the followers, supports and everyone submitting and tagging BBJ…without you all I’m just some fool in weird pants [laughs].
