Dominican-born, NYC-raised artist Chica LaFresa is a tour de force of many hats; reading her story, it’s revealed that she’s well-versed in everything from improv comedy to cannabis cuisine. More recently, Chica is been gearing up for the release of her EP Trippycïta, led by the grooving, soulful cut “Foreva”.
This week, RESPECT. is excited to premiere Chica’s follow-up single titled “Don’t Tell Me,” which sees production from Big Boy. The brooding, emotional track (which is somewhat reminiscent of FKA Twigs) takes inspiration from a past toxic relationship, as she explained via email:
When you go thru a lot in life and you lose a lot of people that you love over and over again you find yourself bargaining in relationships where you’ll deal with hurtful things just to feel like your being loved. When I wrote this song i was just tired of the drama, tired of being told I was loved when the actions just make me feel pain. I was tapping into that element of relationships where things have gotten rocky and its a constant battle between love & pain, where your sacrificing your sanity in order to feel like you have a companion.
Enjoy “Don’t Tell Me” below and look out for Trippycïta to make landfall soon (stay up-to-date via her official website). In related news, Chica LaFresa is also developing a one-woman show titled The Building, which will be based off of her experiences living with her grandmother in Harlem and the many individuals that have crossed her path to this point.
