Growing up in a city like Long Beach, California can be a blessing or a curse. It’s a blessing when the city embraces you such as they did with local legends like Tyson Chandler, Snoop Dogg, and others. The curse, well, that’s up for interpretation. The sunny beaches and palm trees offer a stark contrast once the street lights come on. While many may see growing up in gang culture as a burden or even detrimental, others see it as the reason they are who they are, including the good. For every trigger pulled and sack sold, a lesson on loyalty and toughness may follow. For LBC native Mikey Promexthan, the latter serves as the topic of discussion on his new EP, 6800.
Coming in at a short but sweet six tracks, 6800 performs as a teaser for what’s to come from Mikey. Throughout the project, Mikey takes on different themes such as addiction, brotherhood, and making it out the gutter. Utilizing heavy drum kicks dripped in screwed up synths, 6800 feels like one long wavy, lean-filled ride through California with “Everything” and “Codeine Dependance” serving as the anchors a confused, but talented young rapper trying to find not only his sound, but himself. “The project really came out of nowhere, the whole thing was freestyled,” Promethxan told RESPECT. through email, “I scrapped so many projects because of mood switches, so I have a lot of unreleased sh*t.”
