Montell Jordan was a sensation in the early 90’s especially with the break-out hit “This is How We Do It,” — an anthem that ran through every neighborhood, club dance floor and car radio bumping the hit that made the star famous. Yes, he had other hits and while they were good, nothing could compare to the catchy single that is still heard as a theme song in movies and some television shows.
But Montell has turned over a new leaf from his 90’s era and now instead of filling up the clubs with tunes, he is filling up churches with prayers. Yes you read that write.
Jordan, who was signed with Def Jam Records, left the industry in 2003. In 2010 Montell felt the calling on his life to serve the church but still very reluctant to heed the full calling on his life. According to The Huffington Post, not long after he felt the call on his life. Jordan began working with Victory World Church in Norcross, GA., where he was offered the position of lead worship pastor. This took the singer by surprise as he wanted to serve, but unknowingly not exactly in the capacity he being instructed to do.
“My day two on the job, I got there and there’s this license ― a ministry license ― on my desk that says ‘Pastor Montell Jordan,’ and I’m like, ‘Whoa. Somebody made a very, very bad mistake. “They hired and R&B recording artist to come in a lead them in music, to be their worship leader.”
Jordan was surprised by the license and therefore called the church’s HR Dept just to clear things up.
“I’m like, ‘Hey, yo, I think somebody made a mistake. I’m not a pastor,’” he says. “[They said,] ‘Oh, no, you’re a pastor. It’s a pastoral position. You can marry people, bury people, baptize people. It’s a pastoral job.’
Now becoming an overnight Pastor, Jordan found himself becoming uncomfortable with the position at first but has since willingly taken on the job as one of the greatest purposes of fulfillment in his life.
