3 officers who had been involved in the shooting of 12-year-old Tamir Rice are now facing internal disciplinary charges and may lose their jobs—but not for the death of Rice.
Rice had been killed by police officers in 2014. After that tragedy, none of the policemen involved were charged with any wrongdoing, and Rice’s family settled in court for $6 million, according to The Associated Press. Now, however, after over a year of internal investigations, there may be charges led against officers Frank Garmback, William Cunningham, and Timothy Loehmann. Loehmann is being accused of lying on his police application for failing to include an emotional breakdown he suffered in a previous job, as well as other comments on his emotional capacity. Garmback is being accused of driving the police car too close to Rice as well as not reporting the time of the incident. Cunningham is being investigated for working off-duty without permission, as he had been working at the recreation center where Rice had been killed.
The family of Tamir understandably hopes that the policemen are fired, though it would not be for the wrongdoing that they no doubt believe the policemen should have been disciplined for. The Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association has put their own support behind the police officers, saying that while the death was tragic, the officers were not wrong in reacting the way they did. No word yet on when disciplinary decisions will be made.
