CNN reports that the number of congressmen and lawmakers that have determined to boycott the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump continues to grow over the holiday weekend.
The reasons for the boycott differ from person to person, but most cite the news about Russia’s apparent involvement in the election process, as well as the heated interactions between Trump and civil rights icon John Lewis. Lewis had stated that he would not attend the inauguration because he did not recognize Trump as a legitimate president. Trump, in his usual way, attacked back on his Twitter account, saying that Lewis was all “talk, talk, talk” and no action or results. This, being said to a man who has faced violence and oppression and had marched with Dr. King in Selma, brought a great backlash against Trump, including being the reason for lawmakers to abstain from the inauguration process. All this just days before Martin Luther King Jr. day of remembrance, and added to the fact that Trump has since cancelled a visit to the African American History Museum that had been previously scheduled.
Somewhere between 22-25 representatives have been confirmed in being a part of this boycott, and the number continues to grow. The President-elect may have a more sparse showing than he might have expected when it comes to his inauguration on January 20.
