If you’re in any way familiar with Grime, then you should know the name Wiley — he’s considered to be one of its biggest pioneers, thanks to the post-Garage style that he created (known as eskibeat) that led to the birthing of one of the UK’s biggest movements. Since then, the East London emcee/producer has done nothing short of trailblazing, from several successful albums (some of which were the first out of Grime to experiment further into the commercial realm), mixtapes and leaks to memorable clashes and performances throughout. Now, after highly-touted drops from peers Skepta and Kano (among others), the somewhat elusive artist delivers his eleventh studio release Godfather, which he’s stating in interviews to be his last.
The 17-track offering is jammed packed with collaborations (including Skepta) — top-tier picks like Jme, President T, Devlin, Frisco, J2K, Ghetts, Lethal Bizzle and more add to Godfather‘s aggressive, to the core sound. With that said, Wiley easily holds his own alongside the other veterans who contribute (think old man JAY Z killing DJ Khaled‘s “I Got The Keys” last year).
