“Life changing by the second I could never complain/couple shows back to back used to be scared of the stage/trying to shoot for the stars/just perfecting my aim” summarizes what D. Yelv‘s “So Good” is pushing as its message- despite the hardships and setbacks, the Baltimore streets, the doubts, and the failures, life’s been good to D. Yelv, and things continue to look up so long as he does the same.
Yelv’s Cal Ripken EP is set to feature “So Good,” “Cal Ripken,” “Homecoming,” and “Never Could Be,” all featuring a variety of vibes and different methods of approaching the same one. With Jay Z, J. Cole, and Joe Budden littering his influences and an English degree from the University of Maryland helping his versatile and empathetic songwriting capabilities, D. Yelv is certainly on his way to serious recognition.
The somber instrumentation hints at the realities of Baltimore living, from infamous police brutality to gang violence; the lazy melody added with Yelv’s rhymes slushing over it creates a fantastic mellow aesthetic for the track.
You can keep up with the Baltimore artist on Twitter, Instagram, and SoundCloud, and be on the lookout for his upcoming EP, Cal Ripken, which is due January 27th.
