The 2017 film CHiPS follows the adventures of two California Highway Patrol motorcycle officers, Frank ‘Ponch’ Poncherello (Michael Peña – The Martian, End of Watch) and Jon Baker (Dax Sheppard – Parenthood) as they run around the L.A. area stopping speeders and car thieves, helping stranded motorists, assisting paramedics at accident scenes, and occasionally investigating crimes.
Peña’s character is actually an FBI agent who is given the alias of Frank “Ponch” Poncherello and sent into the California Highway Patrol to investigate crooked cops in the force. There he is partnered with reckless and talented motorcyclist rookie cop Jon Baker. Together the duo discovers that the FBI was right and work together to take down Vic Brown (Vincent D’Onofrio – Law & Order: Criminal Intent) and his gang of violent carjackers.
Swapping the Kawasaki’s from the original series for the modern BMW R1200RT-P, isn’t the only thing the film has changed. The film is more raunchy than the series and features wheelies and other motor stunts, lane splitting, pyrotechnics and the CHiPs officers drawing their weapons; something entirely different from the lighthearted police sitcom that very rarely involved Ponch and Baker drawing their weapons. The trailer also shows an RV being blown apart in slow motion. The movie trailer is also full of Dax Sheppard crotch shots, singing, motorcycle stunts and plenty of explosions.
The film is based on the CHiPs television series that aired for six seasons from 1977 to 1983 and starred Larry Wilcox as Baker and Erik Estrada and Poncherello. It ran for 139 episodes and had one reunion movie. None of the original actors from the TV series will be reprising their roles, especially not Estrada who took to twitter after he saw the trailer and called it trash.
CHiPS is written, directed, and co-produced by Shepard. The film also stars Jessica McNamee (The Vow), Adam Brody (The O.C.), Ryan Hansen (Central Intelligence, Veronica Mars) and Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars and Sheppard’s wife off screen).
CHiPS hits theaters on March 24th.
