The state of North Carolina has been a quiet haven, housing some of the best hidden talent in Hip-Hop. For a little over a decade, the Tar Heel State has given rise to esteemed artists such as Little Brother, King Mez, Supastition and J. Cole.
Enter Saihou Ceesay, more commonly known under his moniker, Say’hu (pronounce Say-who). The 24-year old Gambian-American rapper was born in Atlanta, GA, however, most of his formative years were spent back home in his motherland of Gambia, affectionately known as “the smiling coast of Africa.”
Eventually, Say’hu would move back to the states, where he would attend Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, NC before transferring to the University of North Carolina, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Communications. Say cites the enlightened minds of J. Cole, K’naan, 2Pac and the Fugees as major influences, and this is apparent in his music, which focuses on real world socio-economic issues like war, poverty and capitalism — with a strong sense of pride for the place he calls home. In 2012, he made his debut to the music world with his mixtape, The Other Side before shedding light on his home country of Africa, with a visual for the song “Motherland.”
With little time to breathe between projects, Say’hu has taken on the daunting task of taking his talents to the stage, having already performed alongside well-established artists like G-Eazy and Ghanian Hip-Hop recording artist Sakordie. In November, Say’hu released his next project, the ten-track album, They Speaking To Me, which further cements his absolute love for music, period.
Today, Say’hu returns with a new visual clip for the ‘They Speaking To Me’ single “One a Dem,” with Raleigh, NC filmmakers UnKut Cinematics taking the helm of the director’s chair.
One a Dem” takes a few small cues from African music, with its minimalist production provided by NUKE, allowing Say’hu to get his points across, with witty bars like “On to the next, back like I never left / Bring hell to your doors even though the boy heaven sent / Big shot, I don’t give a f*ck like I’m celibate / P*ssy violate til the dogs come for your ex.
His natural talent and love for the art comes in abundance, as proven on both ‘They Speaking To Me’ and his new video, stating “I am grateful for the universal nature of music. It is made everywhere, by anyone, in as many ways as the human heart can feel. As I see it, if it touches the heart, it’s good music. That’s what I want to make.”
