With the news of dictator Fidel Castro’s death on the headlines, people are looking to President Elect Donald Trump on his stance on the situation and the only recently opened lines of communication to the country established by President Barack Obama.
Reince Priebus, the incoming Chief of Staff, gave the statement saying that Trump would be “absolutely” willing to close down negotiations if the situation does not go in the direction that the President Elect would want it to go. According to Politico, Priebus made the following statement:
“Repression, open markets, freedom of religion, political prisoners — these things need to change in order to have open and free relationships…There’s going to have to be some movement from Cuba in order to have a relationship with the United States.”
Trump himself made a statement about how, with the death of Castro, there needs to be a “move away from the horrors” of the regime, and promised that his administration will do all it can for the people who have suffered in Cuba. Whether this promise will stand if there is none of that “movement in the right direction” under Raul Castro that Priebus mentioned is yet to be seen.
