The terrifying creature known as the Slenderman that has haunted the internet since 2009 is now getting its own documentary, Beware the Slenderman, by HBO.
Slenderman is a tall, long-limbed, faceless man in a suit who typically abducts and terrorizes people. The story of this creature first appeared through the “Something Awful” forums, created by user Eric Knudsen. Since the inception of the legend, many have been fascinated with it, creating photos and expanding on the stories. There are multiple webseries made around the Slenderman, such as Marble Hornets, clips of which can be seen in the trailer, and a movie available through iTunes, Always Watching.
The documentary itself will have the most focus on the court case still in process about two young girls, Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier, who lured their friend Patyon Leutner into the woods and stabbed her 19 times in an attempt to sacrifice her to the Slenderman back in 2014. Director Irene Taylor Brodsky says that “The narrative does not revolve around guilt or innocence, but instead the court’s deliberation whether the girls should be tried as adults or children.”
“Beware the Slenderman” will premiere on HBO January 23, 2017. You can watch the trailer below.
