The tribulations of a person tasked with irrevocable creation of expression- through music, artwork, or otherwise- is an oftentimes overlooked aspect of any art form. We see these tribulations through the lyrics, the production, and sometimes through social media. Terrell Anthony chose the former two to convey his setbacks and discuss his aspirations about the future.
“45” is an individualistic anthem of sorts- a track dedicated to self preservation and to self sufficiency. Introducing the track is commentary referring back to Michael Jordan‘s return to the NBA, this time donning the number “45” as opposed to his signature “23.” The reference alludes to Terrell Anthony’s previous talent, but his potential for greatness and success even subsequent to personal struggles.
The lyrics start with a bold statement of observation: “N**gas only wanna call when your phone busy/Missin’ calls like I ain’t got my phone with me.” Already, it’s clear to see a braggadocio suffused track that has an underlying grittiness to it; evident by, and furthered by, the instrumental in the background, which features a lazy, distorted vocal sample over slow drums.
The 45 Project is due early next year, and, as the name transparently suggests, will be redolent of a “comeback season” similar to what Michael Jordan experienced while wearing the number “45.” The project may as well be called “The Comeback Project.”
