This week’s episode of ‘The Flash’ dealt with monsters both inner and outer. Out in the world Barry and his team faced a monster that was terrorizing the streets of Central City while members of the team were busy battling their inner monsters.
Caitlin heads out of town to tackle the monster developing inside her. She is scared of what she is becoming and turns to her mother (Dr. Carla Tannhauser), another renowned scientist, for help. Unfortunately her mother isn’t quick to offer help until Caitlin reveals that she is the patient by turning her desk to ice. Her mother treats Caitlin like another experiment and runs some bio-tests on her, as their mother/daughter issues continue to transpire; we learn that when Caitlin’s father died her and her mother’s relationship changed and hasn’t been the same since. Caitlin is given another test and ends up absorbing the energy of the entity she cooled down.
Looking to capitalize on Caitlin’s abilities and make a name in the science world for himself, Nigel locks Caitlin in the exam room and tells her she won’t be going anywhere. Caitlin grabs his arm and gives him frost bite. We learn that her anger charges her powers and makes her lose control. Luckily her mother comes to her aid and apologizes for how she treated Caitlin. This calms Caitlin down and allows her to regain control of herself. Her mother let’s Caitlin go and cleans up the mess she made.
Back at Star Labs, Cisco snoops on HR because he doesn’t trust him. He discovers a recording device (a pen) and begins to listen to the message. HR comes back as he is in the middle of doing this and the team discovers that HR is not a scientist but a writer/idea man. He has been restating everything everyone is saying and sometimes coming up with idea but not executing them. HR then tells the team that his partner decrypted the message that Harrison sent him across dimensions and that he is essentially a supervisor of do-ers back on his Earth. He comes up with a strategy and they execute it. This becomes abundantly clear when the team goes after the monster terrorizing the city; HR can’t even triangulate the monsters location. However, the team is willing to give HR one last chance to prove himself, in the meantime we can assume Cisco and Caitlin will run the show.
Caitlin comes back in time to help deal with the monster. Turns out the monster was just a hologram being run by some teenage kid. Barry jumps in to save said kid when Julian fires his gun at him. The teenager then explains to Joe that he did it because he was bullied. He wanted someone else to feel afraid for a change. He wanted to feel powerful.
Later on in “Monster” Julian gives Barry insight into his past. Turns out Julian was the heir to a fortune from a wealthy English family, however he chose to be a scientist. He was at the top of his game until the meta-humans came along and swept the rug out from underneath him. This is why he despises metas, however The Flash may have changed his perception of them and allowed him to open up to Barry. He is willing to give Barry a shot and goes to grab a drink with him. Could these two finally get along?
Other notable moments:
Barry and Cisco are roomies.
Iris tries to get Joe to take Cecile up on her offer. Joe tells Iris to stop playing cupid.
We also learn the more Caitlin uses her powers, the more difficult they will be to reverse. Can you actually reverse the meta-gene? If so, will this be used to defeat other metas? Will Barry or any of the other good metas use it get rid of their powers and lead a normal life?
Next Week:
Wally dreams about being Kid Flash and he gets possessed.
Barry meets Dr. Alchemy face to face.
