It’s been about three months since we heard from THEY., but the popular Los Angeles multi genre music duo has returned with yet another banger. This time, THEY. payed homage to great guitarist Nirvana by revamping “Polly” to create, “Rather Die.”
What’s special about this track is not just the sampling of Nirvana’s guitar, but ability to create an entire new sound with it. With the bass, clapping and melodic ad-lib additions to the production, They. created an R&B rock song, which is great for unifying the music culture. THEY. are known for their ability to create distinctive sounds by fusing genres and they have always been successful at.
Here’s what they told FADER about the “Rather Die” —
“I’ve always felt that it’s important for an artist to pay tribute to what first inspired you. We were vibing out on guitar and started playing “Polly,'” THEY. explained to The FADER over email. “Its just one of those riffs that hits you from the first moment you hear it. Before we knew it, we have our own song to it. All the business people begged us to change it, but we couldn’t bring ourselves to change it. We did what was best for the song and our fans just let it be what it was intended to be, two guys vibing to one of their favorite riffs of all time.”
