20 years ago, Tupac Shakur, an iconic artist in hip-hop culture, was unjustly murdered. In celebration of his life and legacy, a Tupac-inspired pop-up restaurant will be opening in Frenso, California on September 13th.
Prior to his untimely death, Shakur had made plans to open a restaurant called the “Powamekka Café.” According to reports from Rolling Stone, the rapper had sketched ideas for a restaurant and cookbook based on his own recipes as well as contributions from other musicians. On one of the notes in Shakur’s plans, it included a logo incorporating the Ankh symbol, branding slogans and drawings for the bathroom doors labeled “Divaz” and “Playaz.”
Thanks to the efforts from a California-based diner, Take 3 Burgers, partnering up with Sam Hansen, the creative marketing director for the minor league baseball team Fresno Grizzlies, they will use Shakur’s blueprints to bring his vision to life for one day only in his memory. The café’s menu will include original sketches from Tupac as well as themed dishes such as the California Love Sandwich, Hennesey Apple Butter chicken wings and Thug Passion cake pops.
During this notable grand opening, an art show will be held, along with inviting local musicians to perform their covers of the rapper’s greatest hits. The Powamekka Café will be an event open to all ages on September 13th, at 7pm at Fulton Mall in Fresno California.
This tasteful commemoration for the influential rapper will continue into later this year, as the highly anticipated 2Pac biopic All Eyez On Me is scheduled to debut in theaters on November 11th, 2016.
