Theolonious Martin has a knack for soulful instrumentation, and scribbling up a sonic picture of a vintage era and morphing it into a genre-bending beat. This is presumably the case for most of the songs on his and Theo Martins‘ upcoming collaborative effort Why I Left, which will require the aforementioned nostalgic instrumentals to help color in the sentiment behind the project.
The pair came out with “Bad Tendencies,” which details issues that had to be circumvented before and during the departure from their hometowns of Chicago and Rhode Island.
“This song, like the album feels like a return to form. I left home in search of more, in search of….something other than I knew. For so long I’ve felt like Truman Burbank in The Truman Show and i had to see what was on the other side of the glass ceiling. So I left and never looked back. This song is a chapter in the story of leaving in search for more and finding yourself in the midst of the mess.”
It’s a common setback for aspiring musicians, and one that oftentimes never gets addressed as vividly as Theo Martins and Theolonious Martins did here. There’s a lot to be said about the redundant routine and vices that you can give into when venturing around the same area for too long. It also creates an air of loneliness.
“See my home was perfect, but I was deserted”
The project will definitely feature plenty more tracks like this one, and soon we’ll be able to see exactly why Theo and Theolonious left.
