ScHoolboy Q has been working hard at getting in shape and traveling all over the country for his Blank Face tour. I was lucky enough to catch the West Coast rapper in New York City last night at Terminal 5. Let me just say, he did not disappoint one bit.
Doors opened at 7 p.m. and his two openers were native New Yorkers – A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie and Joey Bada$$. This was my first time at Terminl 5, so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I arrived at 8 p.m. and well… the line was long. I wasn’t sure if the show would start “fashionably late,” so although the line was long, it was moving fairly quick. However, once I got in, Bronx’s very own – A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie already performed and was off stage. But thanks to social media, I was able to check out how dope he still was opening up in his city.
Once I got in, Brooklyn native – Joey Bada$$ was onstage getting the crowd ready to go wild. With a cup in his hand, he made sure to get the mosh pit ready to let loose. He killed the stage performing his popular tracks such as “Christ Conscious” and “No. 99.” Not only did he remind us how amazing his debut album ‘B4.DA.$$‘ was, but he took it back and performed tracks off his debut mixtape ‘1999,’ for his day 1 fans. During his wild set, he took time in between his segment to give a shout out to his best friend and Pro Era partner, Capital STEEZ, who tragically took his own life in 2012. To close out his set, Joey had his Pro Era crew out on stage to turn up to his popular track “Devastated.”
Once Joey was off, it was time to get the crowd ready for ScHoolboy Q. The DJ started playing all the bangers, quizzing the audience on their TDE knowledge. He bumped tracks from various different artists in the TDE squad such as Ab-Soul, Jay Rock, and of course, Kendrick Lamar. But not only did the DJ get the mosh sweatier by playing the Top Dawg’s line-up, but he also showed New York love by getting the crowd riled up to A$AP Ferg’s “Shabba,” “New Level,” and A$AP Rocky’s “Lord Pretty Flacko Jodye 2.”
The mosh pit was ready for ScHoolboy Q to come onstage before he was even out yet. Then, you heard “TorcH” play as Q came out on stage with a tie-dye hoodie. Now, I’ve seen Q perform before, but this show was nuts. Not only was it sold out, but he had raging fans moshing during his whole entire set. Those people were prepared for some bruises and an aching body. Normally, Q’s set was only supposed to be an hour long – but he let us know that he didn’t give a f**k and made sure to go over his time limit. He performed almost, if not all of his tracks off his sophomore album ‘Blank Face.‘ He got everyone rapping and jumping their asses off. He performed his track with TDE’s lady, SZA, “Neva CHange,” “JoHn Muir,” “By Any Means,” “WHateva U Want,” “Dope Dealer,” and pretty much anything else you wanted to hear. But, let’s not forget how notorious the west coast rapper’s debut album ‘Oxymoron,’ was. I think a lot of people forget that ‘Oxymoron,’ was a Grammy-nominated album. He certainly didn’t disappoint his fans. He made sure to perform many tracks off of his debut as well. There’s too many goodies to list them all, but he certainly had everyone go crazy when they saw him perform records like “Collard Greens,” “Studio,” “Break The Bank,” “Hell of a Night,” and “Man of the Year.”
In between his sets, he made sure to give thanks to his fans by saying “I wanna thank you. Before y’all I was a f****n loser. Y’all saved my f****n life, I thank all my fans out there man.” But not only that, he let us know because of his successful career, he has custody of his daughter now and that he can put food on her plate… plus send her to the best school in L.A. It was a very beautiful moment to watch and hear as a ScHoolboy Q supporter. But of course the show wasn’t over then. There was plenty more mashing and crowd surfing the entire time he was onstage. He brought his squad out to turn up on stage with him as he wrapped up the show with his lead single featuring Kanye West, “That Part.” To say the show was lit is such an understatement. It was crazy wild and ScHoolboy Q went above and beyond for his fans!
