Mulan, a huge staple in 90’s babies’ films, is set to be made into a live action movie. You know, similar to the way the Jungle Book and Tarzan have been recreated. Both touched me, I may still be a child, not sure, but moving on. As I grow, nostalgia of childhood memories grow in importance. With all of the many tensions in America, one would think the topic of whitewashing a children’s film would get passed up. Ha! Guess again.
Race is a very important topic, not downplaying that at all, but the amount of trolling is a bit entertaining. Its important to laugh at yourself every now and then. Chuckling at your surroundings, or country, from time to time may also be advised. But I’ll leave that to you all. Here are a few examples of how social media has responded to it all.
With only word of a potential movie in the making, no information about casting, yet someone has created a petition in regards to whitewashing fears. Around 90,000 people have already signed this petition. From the outside looking in, we may be a tad obsessed.
I honestly could care less if the Asian character is played by an Asian actor, humans are humans. It is the simple assumption of Mulan being played by a Mallory and the ruffling of so many feathers that has come with it. If no one recalls, the movie’s plot in itself is already about gender identity, so now we’re really making this weird.
Word does travel fast in our technical and social world, so I will give this topic the benefit of the doubt. But please I’m begging everyone, Do not ruin Mulan and make a simple thing complicated.
