Lil’ Wayne shocked the hip-hop community- artists and fans both- with the news that he would be retiring (at least, that’s the popular interpretation) last week. The tweet reads:
I AM NOW DEFENSELESS AND mentally DEFEATED & I leave gracefully and thankful I luh my fanz but I’m dun

Many artists have spilled their thoughts about the NOLA rapper, who’s been in the game since the late 90s, yet still treads along his peak 20 years later. These artists include Chance The Rapper and Young Thug. The greatest blow, however, must’ve been to the fans, who’ve been following him through the tribulations of his career and remaining loyal.
Amongst the aforementioned rappers is one who’s commonly cited as being the top artist of the decade: Kendrick Lamar.
Around two minutes go by of Kendrick rapping along to some notable Weezy hits- including “Gangsta S**t” and “Where You At”- followed by a minute or so long barrage of emotional reminiscing, which culminate in Kendrick repeatedly shouting “NO” at his recording device for the last 15 seconds of the video. Clearly, a very sentimental nerve was attacked inside Kendrick, who, should you go back and listen to his third mixtape, C4, was extremely influenced by Weezy when he first began rapping.
Also on the topic of his retirement, Weezy dropped “Grateful” recently via Tidal, which outlines his successful, embroidered lifestyle, his complications with life, and, very blatantly, his situations involving Cash Money.
“Ain’t afraid to die, I done it already, yeah”
The weight of the complications with Cash Money could very well be the most hardworking factor in making Lil’ Wayne want to retire after his long, yet extremely successful, career.
“And You don’t see Stunna right next to me
And I won’t see Stunna write checks to me
You don’t see Stunna right next to me
And I won’t see Stunna write checks to me
And I still got love for my enemy
Cause I know it’s tough to be interesting”
You can stream Grateful via Tidal, and, hopefully, we’ll see more from Lil’ Wayne in the near future.
