Former N.W.A manager, Jerry Heller passed away last Friday, from a heart attack while driving. His untimely death at the age of 75, while a shocking surprise to some, Ice Cube had no remorse:
“I ain’t gonna pop no champagne, but I ain’t gonna shed no tears either, “It is what it is. We come here to pass, and he’s outta here. Like I said, I’m not losing no sleep over that one.”
Now before you judge and get all filled up with words to shoot back Cube for his “heartless remarks,” you gotta know what started this whole saga between Cube and Heller. According to Rolling Stone, Cube’s feelings toward the former manager had not eased over the years. Cube’s relationship with Heller may have started off okay but in the end due to royalty disputes, the relationship fell apart. And let’s not forget the diss track “No Vaseline” which was towards N.W.A group members Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, MC Ren, DJ Yella and of course none other than former manager, Jerry Heller. While Cube had reconciled with the other group members, he never reconciled with Heller.
Heller’s resurfaced last year when the movie Straight Outta Compton came out. The movie depicted Heller in a nasty, negative light; something the former manager didn’t necessarily agree too or on. Heller later filed a 110 million defamation lawsuit against Dr. Dre and Ice Cube but the case dismissed in court this past June.

Heller had since stated that the movie was very hurtful:
“I thought ‘No Vaseline’ was hurtful. But actually, this was more hurtful. Look, I am what I am, but I’m not a thief. And I’m not scandalous. I did more for N.W.A … I mean, it was just incredible, the success that we had. So for them to call me a thief is just terrible.”
Cube’s son had a similar thought as his father about Heller’s passing:
“Of course, Heller had his moments where he was the champion for the group of N.W.A, and he does deserve credit for a lot of the good that he has done,” the younger Jackson told a cameraman at the airport. “But if it wasn’t nothin’ shady, it’d be way better…the good that he did do, I’m not gonna say it outweighed the bad. Rest in peace.”
Eazy E’s daughter E.B. Wright had a different comment as she felt the movie also portrayed Heller in a different light:
“At the end of the day, I don’t feel the film was 100 percent true, and stand behind Jerry Heller to the fullest,“He was like a second father to my dad, so I’m gonna call him, like, another grandfather to me. He lived many years of people hating him and thinking wrongly of him, and people don’t know the truth…that takes a toll on a person who knows that they were very genuine and really had everybody’s best interest at heart.”
At the end of day, regardless of what people may have thought about Heller – good or bad, Cube was just happy to be in a good place:
“I’m just glad I’m with my brothers today. I’m glad I’m with DJ Yella, I’m glad I’m with MC Ren today, it’s only right.”
