Vancouver’s not known for pumping out young hip-hop talent at the rate Toronto is these days but that’s not to say there isn’t potential for a breakout star to emerge from Canada’s western most metropolis. Citing DJ Quik, J. Cole and PARTYNEXTDOOR as influences, Jay Branks is an 18-year-old from Van City that’s got a pretty well-rounded musical arsenal of singing, rapping and producing. The three songs on his soundcloud showcase a feathery voice, a knack for catchy melodies and surprising confidence in the lyrical department. The teenager’s already got a sizeable local buzz around his live performances and a cult fanbase at a very ripe age. I tracked him down and was able to get his thoughts on music and his creative process.
“Creating my own music developed from my passion for music as a listener. Life is the inspiration behind my music. Music is the platform i use in my personal life to try and understand why things happen the way that they do and I can lay it all out into my work. I want to put Couver on the map. I am what my city has made me. I never had anyone to look up to and a large part of my thought process is wanting to be that someone to look up to.”
