At midnight last night, Young Thug released his long awaited new album Jeffery, but somehow the focus has shifted from the music to his album artwork. The internet just can not get over the image of Young Thug in this ice blue dress accessorized with an umbrella hat. Now, Thug wearing women’s clothing is actually nothing new. In fact, the artist has mentioned before in an interview with GQ that he prefers the way women’s clothing fits his body, and probably 90 percent of his closet is made up of women’s clothing.
To many people who listen to rap, especially the new sound of rap today, the perception is that rap is supposed to be on trap beats and should be tough, masculine, or hood. Young Thug continuously challenges the preconceived notion of masculinity in hip hop- that men can’t still be men even though they wear women’s clothing. The issue lies in that he’s comfortable with his manhood no matter what he’s wearing. Kudos to Young Thug for sending out this message to people in Hip-Hop because it is a message that the community needed to hear.
Rap doesn’t need to be so narrow minded, nor was it meant to be. The rap industry needs this wake up call and hopefully the world will listen. For those who have an issue with Young Thug’s choice of attire, ask yourself this, if the music is good and you still listen to it, does it really matter what he wears?
