If you’re lucky, perhaps you have many fond memories spent frolicking within a record store, browsing the hundreds of vinyls and CDs until finally stumbling upon a hidden gem. Such experiences are a rarity nowadays, with record stores around the nation slowly succumbing to a changing music landscape. In an effort to appeal to nostalgia, Billboard recently caught up with Chicagoan superstar Chance the Rapper and his manager, Pat to peruse the selection at Reckless Records in the Wicker Park neighborhood.
Wearing his signature Chance 3 hat, Chance does a full sweep of the store, picking out a vinyl copy of J Dilla’s Donuts album, Wu-Tang Clan’s stellar debut 36 Chambers on CD, and even fellow Chitown artist Mick Jenkin’s The Waters, among others. Forever the champion of free music, the Kanye West prodigy then proceeds to announce he’s giving all of the records away. He’s quickly surrounded by eager music fans, some of which who are curiously unfamiliar they’re talking with one of the biggest names in music today. Of course, the 23-year-old is famous for releasing all of his music thus far for free, but it’s an entirely different entity when you start giving away other artists’ music as well. Just another reason why Chance continues to fill our ears along with our hearts.
