As proven in recent years by the likes of Raury and Childish Gambino, not all the hip-hop coming out of Atlanta is necessarily made for the clubs. There’s nothing wrong with that sound, of course, but Hip-Hop (like any genre) needs variety to sustain. And that’s just part of the reason why rising ATLien DAEtrius is so damn intriguing. There’s also the fact that the kid can rap his ass off.
At least, that much is apparent on his stellar The EBRO Demo EP, which he dropped as a response to Hot 97’s Ebro Darden’s proclamation that Atlanta rappers need to step their bars up. Clearly, the Georgia city has been a hotbed for hip-hop creativity over the years, but Darden argued that all we’ve recently heard from the A is a bunch of clones. The Ebro Demo proves exactly how wrong that sentiment is.
Armed with slick boom-bap instrumentals from Epikh Pro, the Olympicks, and NaScent, DAEtrius flexes his immense rapping chops throughout the project’s five tracks. That goes for the jazzier and introspective “Nobody Believes,” the more snarling “Lion’s Den” that opens the EP, and the soulful meditation of “Voice Memos.”
It’s on that final track where DAE mentions he has both a chip on his shoulder and a lump in his throat, two feelings any young creative can relate to. He may be ready to take over the world, but the kid’s still got some anxiety about it all. But hey, if he’s capable of churning out material like The Ebro Demo, it’s obviously working out alright for him.
While the EP is available for stream (and purchase) below, courtesy of RESPECT., be on the lookout for his upcoming full-length project, Percy Park, to drop later this year.
