When we last heard from Kentucky rapper, Allen Poe, he had teamed up with Denmark Vessey for a woozy loosie, “Memory.” It was the latest in a string of material proving Poe’s grind and ability to complement pretty much any beat thrown his way. That’s not to say Vessey’s was totally left-field, but, yeah, you’ll understand when you hear it.
And on his latest joint, “Incandescent,” Poe sounds even sharper and focused, but there’s a really good reason for that. It’s the lead single off his upcoming EP, Lightbulb Over My Head While I’m Thinking, with Montreal-by-way-of-Nigeria producer Teck–Zilla, who’s well-known for his crazy sample flips. That quality is on full display on “Incandescent,” which flips from contemplative head-nodder into brassy slapper to complement the respective MC.
Poe handles the more laid-back portion, and uses it to wax poetic about, well, waxing poetic. There’s a lot of thought to his bars, and it suits the EP’s concept of exploring conscious thought. For the brassy bit, Queens rapper Hannibal King sounds hungry and motivated, which matches the beat-switch perfectly. It all makes you wish the track was a bit longer, but hey, that’s what the rest of the EP is for, right?
