MONSTA X, a seven member K-pop boy group, has returned after three months with a present for their fans, MONBEBEs, with a new music video, “Stuck” or in Korean, “네게만 집착해” (which literally means, “I only cling to you or I am only obsessed with you.” This track is from their third mini album, ‘The Clan: Part. 1 Lost‘ that was released earlier this year in May. Their title track was “All In,” a song about a guy who goes “all in” for his love. The music video was rather a cinematic and dramatic music video with an extensive story line – the first part in their 2.5 part series. The song “Stuck” has a similar vibe and meaning to their title track, as it is about a man who is obsessed and “stuck” on the girl he is interested in.
The song begins with heavy clapping beats and Jooheon’s introductory rap, “Okay man, 2016. Wait, let’s go!” The first verse is dominated by the vocalists and then followed by the chorus. The second verse immediately starts with the two rappers of the group, first Jooheon and then I.M. and continues with more singing. Before the song enters the chorus, there is a two line rap by both rappers which builds a strong momentum before the hook. After the second chorus finishes, there is only the instrumental that is designated for the dance break. The song concludes with another repetition of the chorus. Unfortunately, there is no real bridge in this song, which was a bit disappointing, but understandable. There weren’t any lines that I particularly liked, as overall, the song expresses powerful masculinity through possessiveness and protectiveness over the girl they love. Instead, I enjoyed the song’s comprehensive sound and the choreography, especially, when they used their shirt as part of a dance move during the chorus.
Visually, the music video is seemingly simple but nevertheless, worth watching. Most shots are of the members dressed in different styles of black long-sleeves and black ripped jeans dancing in a dusty and unkempt abandoned building with various graffiti on the walls. The start of the music video, contains shots of the members, alone, in different places in Los Angeles, as well as the LA skyline. Besides the dancing, there are also close-ups of the members as they sing or rap their parts. The video is rather sparse in special effects. There are a few effects such as the change between color shots and a black-and-white filter that coincides with the fast tempo of the song. One part of the music video that stood out was the quick shot of a fallen sunflower among garbage. It was kind of out of place with the whole theme of this music video, but it may be related to their title track “All In” which was heavily focused on the delphinium flower. This may be a hint for fans for the upcoming part of their series in their next mini album.
One part of the music video that I liked is the dance break, where member Wonho does a solo dance first, and then the other members join in. The choreography during this part suited the increasing tempo of the song. Another part I liked was the ending of the video where it’s clear that the sun is beginning to set, and the camera zooms out from the members to the surrounding scenery of many trees and a lake. Moreover, before the camera pans out, the film starts out in grey film and then quickly but subtly transitions into color, which was a beautiful visual effect.
This music video with its energetic rap and smooth vocals is definitely worth the listen as well as the watch.
