Two powerful earthquakes have hit central Myanmar, India and Accumoli, Italy early Wednesday morning. Both earthquakes which were measured at a 6.8 magnitude in India and at a 6.2 magnitude in Italy have left both countries with a devastating aftermath. It has been reported that in the city of Accumoli at least 38 people have been killed and has left thousands of others homeless. The quake stuck in the early hours of the morning when most residents were asleep. Shortly after the Italian army was mobilized to help with special heavy equipment and the treasury released 235 million euros ($265 million) of emergency funds. At the Vatican, Pope Francis cancelled part of his general audience to pray for the victims.
Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said he would visit the disaster area later in the day: “No one will be left alone, no family, no community, and no neighborhood. We must get down to work, to restore hope to this area which has been so badly hit,” he said in a brief televised address. There have been reports of more death in the towns of Amatrice, Accumoli and other villages including Pescara del Tronto and Arquata del Tronto. It is believed that there are more than the initial death toll of 38, but rescue teams have only just reached a few of the stricken areas.
While in central Myanmar, three people including two children have already been reported dead, local officials said. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake hit near the town of Chauk, southwest of Mandalay. Tremors were felt as far away as Thailand, where witnesses reported high rise buildings swaying in Bangkok, and the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka. Currently there have been no other confirmed casualties, and early reports have suggested that there has been limited damage to the area overall.
