Hip-Hop has always faced accusations of going pop. At first, it was generally just the older regime complaining because the genre has left the cucumb of the stoops in NYC. But then, Hip-Hop really did go pop. We started seeing established artists such as Jay-Z, Puffy and align forces with pop icons like Beyonce and Michael Jackson which in turn transitioned into fully fledged pop artists, who were also Hip-Hop — Pitbull, Flo Rida, etc. Next in line to join the pop rapper realm is Kansas City native Reid The Martian who graces the RESPECT. pages for the first time with the new single, “The Other Side“.
Hailing from his most recent project, Excuses Not to Sleep, “The Other Side” has a heavy pop feel with a more introspective message. Throughout the track, Reid showcases his knack for melodic bars as he seamlessly goes from boy band singer to qualified lyricist. “Yearning for something I can get without applying/ I’d be lying if I said without my dad that’d I’d be flying” raps Reid over heavy guitar riffs and a background chorus.
Be sure to check out the track, “The Other Side” below, and take a listen to Excuses Not to Sleep, out now.
