If anyone has been wondering where singer Lloyd has been, he’s been busy growing back his hair, learning to play the guitar, signing a new label deal, getting his GED, and recording new music for his upcoming EP. Lloyd seems to have a pattern of taking a break from music after an album release and coming back with a banger. Despite his disappearance from the music scene since his 2011 album release King of Hearts, clearly the man has been keeping himself busy.
The former Murder Inc. artist took a five year hiatus from music to spend some much needed time with his family and experience personal growth as a man. Lloyd made the right choice in taking this hiatus because now he is back with his most honest single to date “Tru.” In the single, the R&B crooner mentions losing a child he looked forward to having, separating himself from certain people and certain habits, and learning how to be less prideful and more vulnerable.
In an interview with V-103 Atlanta, Lloyd explains that the inspiration for “Tru” came from learning that his younger brother was battling depression and contemplating suicide. Of course, depression and other mental health disorders are serious issues when it comes to African-Americans. Due to lack of resources and lack of support, many African-Americans suffering from mental health disorders feel forced to suppress their feelings. As a result from witnessing a loved one’s triumph, Lloyd is able to speak on real life experiences and at the same time give the fans exactly what they’ve been waiting for.
