After publicly being targeted for a second time this year, Leslie Jones took her website down on Wednesday afternoon [August 24]. Nude photos of her were posted on her website from her iCloud account along with photos of her passport and driver’s license, and a racist video of the deceased gorilla, Harambe. Her phone number and the password to her Twitter account were also displayed.
Since July of this year, Jones has been attacked via Twitter by racist trolls because of her portrayal of a leading character in the all-female remake of Ghostbusters. As a result, Jones declared her departure from Twitter, but returned to the social media site a few days later after Jack Dorsey, the CEO and co-founder of Twitter, banned Milo Yiannopoulos, the accused ringleader of the trolls, from the social network. Yiannopolous told The Hollywood Reporter, “I’m distressed to hear that Leslie Jones has been hacked and naked pictures of her have been posted online. I know we had our differences after my review of Ghostbusters, but I wish her all the best at what must be a deeply upsetting time.”
It has been reported The Department of Homeland Security is currently investigating the hack. “ICE Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in New York does currently have an open investigation,” a spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security told Variety. “As a matter of agency policy, we are unable to disclose any information related to an active investigation.”
