LeBron James once stated in an interview:
“My motivation is this ghost I’m chasing. This ghost played in Chicago.”
Without a doubt, he is referring to Michael Jordan and wanting to be considered the greatest of all time. These comments brings up the debate: “What does LeBron have to do in order to surpass Michael Jordan as the greatest of all time?” Coming from the perspective of a 20 year old that unfortunately couldn’t witness the greatness of Jordan, I understand that my opinion might be biased. I’ve closely followed LeBron James career, and do know quite a bit about Michael Jordan’s career despite not watching that era of basketball.
Usually, NBA fans who watched the previous era- when Michael Jordan was in his prime- would say there is nothing LeBron can do to surpass the original number 23’s greatness. I respectfully disagree. Right now, I believe that LeBron James is the greatest all around talent and is indeed better than Jordan. However, I do think there are steps for LeBron James to be the G.O.A.T. in everyone’s eyes.
If LeBron James beats the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals this year, it will be something that Michael Jordan was never able to do; beat the super team. With the talent that is on Golden State, it’s hard to deny that they are arguably the greatest team assembled in NBA history. Colin Cowherd from The Herd breaks it down the best.
Unfortunately, one aspect of the game that trashes James’ credibility is the Cleveland Cavaliers‘ performance in the finals. His finals records in terms of wins and losses is 3-4. Comparing this to Michael Jordan’s 6-0 record, it’s hard to tell Michael Jordan fans that LeBron is on par with Michael Jordan. However, if he surpasses Michael Jordan in terms of rings, it would be easier to state such a claim. At that point, LeBron would reach at least 11 NBA finals to Michael Jordan’s six, have seven rings to Michael Jordan’s six, and possibly more Finals MVP’s than Jordan.
These are simply two possibilities for LeBron James to surpass Michael Jordan in other people’s eyes. Do I think LeBron James can accomplish such complicated tasks? I honestly have no idea. However, I believe that LeBron James is the greatest basketball player of all time. Hopefully, everyone else is able to come to this realization, like I have.
