There was a vibrant fragrance in the air even before the set began- the oppressing summer sun visited Central Park and the bodies in it, making everyone sweat before they were given a reason to. I stood next to flower hats and sundresses, tank tops and high socks, and gapped teeth. Someone next to me grabbed my attention and said:
“LISTEN, I quit my JOB for this S**T!”
The sounds of Drake and Thundercat incentivized this same person to start dancing the second he finished his sentence. It was around this time someone came out and asked, “Y’all ready for GoldLink?”
The Washington D.C. rapper came out in ripped black pants and a short sleeve hoodie, and immediately began playing through his set, with songs like “Sober Thoughts,” “Dance On Me,” “Dark Skin Women,” and his most recently released track “Fall In Love,” which features Ciscero.
GoldLink’s genre of music is self-categorized as “Future Bounce,” and, just like the name suggests, it makes people’s feet move. The energy of the crowd was a collective yell, and it intensified when GoldLink brought out Masego to help out with the performance.
Masego’s also known for his genre blending, having named his type of music “Traphouse Jazz.” He came out the back bouncing and levitating, wearing an oversized short sleeve button down shirt and a necklace with a saxophone on it. The first song of his mini-set, “Send Yo Rita!” features a sax solo after the first hook, which Masego replicated, and even further freestyled, on stage with his own saxophone. Afterwards, the two linked up and performed “Late Night,” a clear crowd favorite.
