Early this morning, an infinite video stream was posted to boysdontcry.co, a website belonging to R&B singer, Frank Ocean. The video loop posted, is an art project directed by New York based artist Francisco Soriano, and sponsored by Apple Music.
The video loop by Francis Soriano, is a short loop of what appears to be the behind-the-scenes of a music video-photography set, or woodworking station. Equipment lays motionless on two tables in the midst of a large and empty industrial space. There is no music or color. While some may see this video loop as unimpressive or a disappointing substitute for his upcoming album, Frank rarely gives updates to his fans, a characteristic that makes him so irresistible and sought after, therefore any progress at this late stage in the album releasing game, is good progress. Head on over to boysdontcry.co to check out the video.
This isn’t the first time Soriano and Ocean have worked together, as Fader points out that Soriano was a primary force behind the music video for “Lost”. After briefly claiming responsibility on Instagram, the artist deleted the post, but not before followers snagged a few screen shots. Upon venturing deeper into Soriano’s Instagram catalog, one can find several rare picture of Ocean including the ones below.

While Soriano’s relationship appears to be a close one, Soriano has also spent time working with other notable talents such as K’Naan, Mobroder, and Duck Sauce. Unfortunately, for Soriano impatient fans have now flocked to his Instagram comment section to voice their frustration. According to some frustrated fans, they’ve mistaken the endless loop for a live stream and some have even invested several hours into watching the stream, waiting for something to happen.
In regards to the posted video, the website boysdontcry.co, is a reference to Ocean’s third coming album, under the same name. While Ocean has not officially confirmed the upcoming album’s title, the numerous references to “Boys Don’t Cry” in the form of hashtags, cryptic social media hints, and of course the website, has over the past year led fans and critiques to safely assume this is most likely the title Ocean’s third studio album will be released under.
As August 1st has now arrived, fans are understandably disappointed with yet another month and no album. To put salt in the wounds of those most hopeful, Ocean posted a picture to boysdontcry.co earlier this month in what seemed to depict the release date of his upcoming album (see below).
While the decision to post such an image now begins to look like nothing more than a troll from Ocean, perhaps he meant something totally different. If you notice, at the top of the image it says “Date Due”, at the bottom “Boys Don’t Cry”, and the last date stamped is an unspecific date in July. Now, while this seems to be a dead give-away that the project is set for a July release, upon downloading the image from boysdontcry.co, one will notice the title of the image in the download folder is “librarycard”. This now offers some closure that perhaps, Frank is conceptualizing the project as a library book that he keeps signing out, therefore requiring the stamp of another future return date. According to the dates, Ocean has been continually signing out the book for himself since last year at this time, proposing the question of “when will the rest of the world get a chance to enjoy it?”. While this may not offer the clarification of when the album will drop, it speaks to the fact that with Frank Ocean, every single detail is significant.
For those worried the album is nothing more than the sum of hopeless rumors and expectations, several artists have come forth to let fans know they have indeed heard Ocean’s new album, and offer nothing but positive praise without giving too much away. As R&B fans and the hip-hop community wait with bated breath on any new album update no matter the size, it seems Frank Ocean is continuing to do what he does best, and that’s whatever he wants, when he wants.
