As of August 4, Hillary Clinton’s lead in national polls over Donald Trump has widened: last month where she held a 3-point lead in the McClatchy-Marist survey she now holds at a 15-point lead according to CNN. Similarly, in an NBC News-Wall Street Journal poll she now holds a 9-point lead where in early July it was at a 5-point advantage.
Part of the reason for this increase in popularity in the polls can be attributed to the DNC having recently ended, where Clinton officially became the Democratic presidential nominee. The bounce after the DNC may soon fade, though other factors can be connected to the rise. Another reason for this spike could possibly be associated with the rather bad week that Trump has had. In the past week, Trump has feuded with the Muslim family of a fallen soldier, has refused to endorse House Speaker Paul Ryan, a Republican favorite, and has had to backtrack after falsely claiming to see a video involving the $400 million payment to Iran, among other less than stellar performances.
While supporters of Trump claim that there will be a rebound in the polls and he will rise again, time will tell if this is just a DNC bounce or if people are finally reacting to Trump’s examples of what he would be like as a president.
