Authorities have reported that a Florida police officer shot and wounded an autistic man’s black caretaker. The incident occurred when the North Miami Police Department received a 911 call on Monday about an armed man who was threatening suicide. When the officer arrived to the scene he ordered 47-year-old Charles Kinsey, a therapist who works with people with disabilities and his 27-year-old patient, who was sitting in the street playing with a toy truck, to lie on the ground. Kinsey complies with the officer’s order and proceeds to lie on the ground and puts his hands up while still trying to get his patient to comply. The officer then fired his weapon three times, striking Kinsey in the leg. No weapon was found on the scene.
Kinsey’s attorney, Hilton Napolean, provided cellphone footage to the Herald on Wednesday just moments before the shooting. In the footage you can see Kinsey laying in the ground and asking the officer not to shoot him.
“Sir, there’s no need for firearms,” Kinsey said he told police before he was shot, according to WSVN. “It was so surprising. It was like a mosquito bite.”
Around 6 p.m. Wednesday, a group called the Circle of Brotherhood, an organization Kinsey is a part of that works to solve problems in the community, stood outside the North Miami Police Department requesting that the police answer questions about what happened and if the officer responsible for shooting will face any charges.
North Miami Police have not released the officer’s name, race or an update on the investigation. The Office who discharged his weapon has been placed on administrative leave and the investigation has been turned over to the state attorney’s office.
