It was at the Republican National Convention on July 20, described as “weird” by some commentators in attendance, that Ted Cruz became the first speaker ever to be booed off the stage.
Cruz, the Texas senator who had previously been in the presidential race, congratulated Donald Trump on his nomination, but refused to endorse him. Cruz and Trump had had bad relations when they were still running against each other, attacks made by Trump on Twitter attacking the Senator’s wife among more direct comments towards the Senator, such as the nickname “Lyin’ Ted.” According to CBS, Trump and Cruz had met about a month ago to discuss the Senator’s speaking at the RNC, and Trump had Tweeted that he knew what the Senator was going to say beforehand but let him go on stage nevertheless. Cruz spoke about the recent tragedies in Orlando, Baton Rouge, and Nice and appeared to be calling for unification.
“To those listening, please, don’t stay home in November. Stand, and speak, and vote your conscience, vote for candidates up and down the ticket who you trust to defend our freedom and to be faithful to the Constitution. It’s love of freedom that has allowed millions to achieve their dreams.”
Cruz’s speech ended with the crowd yelling at him to “say it”—to endorse Trump—but the Senator just ended his speech by thanking the people for their enthusiasm. Trump, in his Twitter response, mentioned that Cruz “didn’t honor the pledge” but called it “no big deal.”
