Blank Face LP was the culmination of progress in ScHoolboy Q’s rap career and his coping of his upbringing. The record is unapologetic in depicting sordid gang life, tragedy, and emotional dissatisfaction. The same elements are smoothly translated into visual format.
Whereas the “Groovy Tony” visual featured a larger than life persona of Q’s alter ego (and featured him on fire, then lighting a blunt with his burning flesh), the “JoHn Muir” music video was embedded with an acidic reality that many residents of lower income neighborhoods face.
The song itself talks about the inauguration of Q into gang life; in an interview, Q said he’s been gangbanging as early as 12. At a listening party, he described the song as saying:
“The beginning of me f**king with my homies from the hood. The beginning of me stealing, robbing, getting beat up, jackin’ n***as, getting jacked, the whole nine.”
The video itself, film in its entirety from the outside right rear of a car, shows a young man beginning to get tied into gang life by showing him getting picked up from school (about midway through the video), and performing drug deals, shooting at his opposition, and much more.
The video can be viewed above, and our review of Blank Face LP can be read here.
