Rihanna lets her fans know that playing Pokemon-Go at her concert is just plain rude boy. During her ANTI tour in Lille, France, RiRi let it be known that she demands presence at her performances.
We’ve all been there. You’re at a concert, and your favorite song comes on. So what do you do, enjoy the live performance you payed $50 to see? No, we pick up our phones to record or Snapchat the moment. Guilty as charged.
The desire to remember concerts is in itself flattering for the performer. However, the jonesing habit of reaching for our phones at performances ironically hinders us from enjoying the moment. This kind of behaviour is what offends Rihanna, and rightly so.
Pokemon-Go is a world (and phone) shattering phenomenon, that allows you to catch pokemon in your own world (or screen). The virtual reality of catching a Jigglypuff in your own backyard has invaded the minds and phones of so many in such a short time.
At the concert in Lille, Rihanna pleaded with her fans, saying:
“I don’t want to see you texting your boyfriends and your girlfriends,” followed by “I don’t want to see you catching any pokémons up in this b**ch.”
Taking pictures and Snapchatting at concerts is no longer the most annoying thing you can do. The next level of concert faux-pas is trying to catch a Squirtle in the crowd while Rihanna is grinding to “Work.”
The smart-phone epidemic is making its users increasingly not-so-smart. If all you can remember from a concert is finding a pokestop, you know you have a problem.
Rihanna’s witty comments are a cry for presence. Being the diva that RiRi has rightly become, she doesn’t need to compete for attention next to a Charmander or a Charizard.
B**ch better put their phone away.
