Rapper, singer, producer, entertainer, inspiration, and a representation to hip-hop. Missy Elliott has always been and continues to be dope. The creativity in her music videos would make any fan wish they could crawl inside their television screens and live those 3-4 minutes of a different, but yet better universe. From rocking the garbage-bag Michelin Man suit, the jeep, and the fisheye lens being used like crazy on “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)” video. To ‘boys, boys, all type of boys,’ letting Allyson Stoner break dance in the “Work It” video, and Missy swallowing a car in one scene. And may we never forget the excitement we felt when the single “WTF (Where They From)” with Pharrell dropped. Rumors were circulating across many blogs that Missy was no longer making music, so when the visuals to “WTF” dropped out of the blue we felt excited for music again and were happy to know that Missy was back.
NPR Music critic Ann Powers beautifully stated what Missy Elliott means to so many fans.
‘Missy is a unique figure in the history of pop music, and particular in the video age. She’s known for these incredible inventive, very kinetic clips that feature her in outrageous outfits doing dance moves that just dazzle you – and of course, rhyming like nobody’s business as well. It’s right in the line with what Missy’s always done, but that’s what we crave – we need it, and there’s really no other figures like her in all hip-hop. She’s not afraid to cross all kinds of boundaries and be herself. Thank you Missy for filling the Missy-sized gap that we’ve had in pop for so long.’
So in honor of Missy’s birthday let’s enjoy some of her greatest gems.
