One of the most popular responses to the phrase “Black Lives Matter” is “All Lives Matter.” People on Twitter have taken to critiquing this movement and its “inclusivity” through the hashtag #AllLivesDidntMatter.
The tag is used in posts where the oppression non-white people have experienced has been ignored by a good portion of mainstream media. According to the Huffington Post the hashtag was likely first used in 2015, and it is now being revived after more deaths of unarmed black men at the hands of police officers. The tag started trending on Monday, with many posts critiquing the systems in place that harm Black and other non-white communities both in current times and throughout history.
The post includes messages such as:
“#AllLivesDidntMatter when they were pouring money into mass incarceration instead of public education in poor neighborhoods” (@OGSavTyrell)
and:
“#AllLivesDidntMatter when they didn’t include the rest of American history in books to only teach us about white American contributions” (@gloed_up)
The tweets that include #AllLivesDidntMatter continue in this vein, making comments on the responses of U.S. citizens about Syrian refugees, treatment of Native Americans, the stigma against immigrants from South America, and the continued violence against Black people. While this hashtag goes around, hopefully people will take a closer look at their motives when they say “all lives matter” and see if that’s what they have always been saying.
