“I think I paid my dues, I think I lift my cup/I think my rent is due, I think I’ll get high/Window shopping, couldn’t cop, no boy caught”
Denzel Curry has been no stranger to introspective rapping in the past, with cuts from his last mixtape, Imperial, making a deeper analysis of Curry’s environment and peers; namely cuts like “If Tomorrow’s Not Here” and “Pure Enough.” The Aquarius Killa has taken leaps from his gritty hood anthems to experimenting with different amalgams of sounds and hitting upon different facets of modern society, and his latest release, “Today,” is no different.
This track sees Curry teaming up with Compton Rapper Boogie, who in June gave a charismatic performance at “Governor’s Ball” in Randall’s Island.
Curry opens up the song with bars about his surroundings and lost companions (I try to unite all my brothers cause I lost n***as/I got Nell and Slikk back so now I kick back/Only thing I pray for is Mookie to get his jit back), while Boogie looks at his innermost struggles, like his alcoholism (I got to stop and see the signs, man a lot been on my mind/All this hurling from this vodka mixed with wine, uh) and untrustworthy sexual companions. The theme of both verses is finding emotional profit in misfortune- a message that haloes the entire song through the hook, sung by Allan Kingdom, which delves into seizing the moment and not looking away in the face of obstacles.
