Last week, America faced one of the most heart-wrenching, devastating and emotional weeks it’s had since 9-11. Two African American men were innocently gunned down by officers and Dallas, Texas lost five decorated officers. due to the tragedy that happened in Minnesota and Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Since these incidents happened, social media and local-to-national news posts have been on a frenzy with reporting caious and peace rallies, erupting within the United States. While everyone is either still fuming from the tragedy and/or organizing peace rallies Country Singer & Inspirational Speaker Coffey Anderson decided to do a “Stop the Violence Safety Video.” To keep not only African-Americans safe, but people in general safe from anymore fatalities.
According to cnn, Anderson’s video for staying safe when police pull you over is reaching a massive audience around the world. Especially after last weeks police shootings; one of which involved Philando Castile whom was fatally shot four times when a Minnesota Police Officer felt threatened when he reaches into his pocket – only to pull out his wallet. Since it’s release on July 8th (the day after the Philando Castile horror) the video has already been viewed 27 million times on Facebook in which is where Coffey uploaded the video to his Facebook page. In the video Coffey re-enacts a traffic stop violation in which he warns drivers to have a plan before they see flashing lights in their rear-view mirror.
“Most of the times when we get pulled over it’s a surprise, we’re not used to it, it’s not something that happens every day,” he says in the video.
Another warning Coffey recommends is that you don’t sit on your wallet:
“If you’re reaching down as he [the officer] walks up, you could be pulling a weapon, which could compromise his safety, which is going to make his adrenaline go up.”
Coffey has received numerous accolades for his awareness to police/civilian situation but has also received a good number of bad comments as well such as this one:
Sorry but this is not the solution, but a band-aid to a very serious wound in American society! – one commenter wrote
While we’re still trying to figure out a solution as to how to work with the police community and figure out the best way for them to work with us, it seems there is definitely a lose of communication some where. If we’re doing everything we’re supposed to do, then what? Perhaps in any situation as tragic as these last ones have been, there is always room for improvement or ways in which we can do something just a little better. There’s a saying going around social media that says “I just want to get home.” It’s a saying in which Castile and Sterling were only trying to do almost a week ago.
“At the end of the day the policeman wants to get home safely, we want to go home safely,” he says. “Even if the cop is having a bad day, you have to go home. You gotta make it home. You’re needed.” Coffey Anderson
