Debbie Wasserman Schultz, chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, announces Sunday, July 24 that she will resign after the DNC convention.
According to CNN, the decision was made as the result of pressure after the revelation of the leaked emails on Friday, July 22. The emails showed that there was a preference by DNC staff members towards Hillary Clinton over Bernie Sanders. As mentioned by the New York Times, Sanders had claimed that this was the case during the primaries. The emails, nearly 20,000 of them appearing on WikiLeaks, appear to support what he had been saying all along. News of Schultz’s impending resignation was accompanied by cheers from Sanders’ fans.
Sanders had his own response to the news:
Debbie Wasserman Schultz has made the right decision for the future of the Democratic Party. While she deserves thanks for her years of service, the party now needs new leadership that will open the doors of the party and welcome in working people and young people. The party leadership must also always remain impartial in the presidential nominating process, something which did not occur in the 2016 race.
It was decided on Saturday that Schultz will not have major speaking roles during the DNC, though she will still open and close the convention, and speak to the delegates “about the stakes involved in this election not only for Democrats, but for all Americans.”
