Banks, the brooding queen of dark R&B, released a dissonant song and video titled “F**ck With Myself.”
The video is both gorgeous and uncomfortable, in true Banks fashion. Her waifish looks and soft whisper contradict her fierce attitude. Don’t judge a banks by her cover.
Jillian Rose Banks, who looks somewhat like the love child of Rose McGowan and Marilyn Manson, was thrown into the spotlight originally by touring with The Weeknd. The singer/songwriter released her first studio album Goddess in 2014. Her songs “Beggin for Thread,” “Warm Water,” and “Waiting Game” are some of the most notable from her Goddess days.
With influences from Lauryn Hill, to Fiona Apple, and even Aaliyah — Banks has always been her own woman.
Rarely seen out of her all-black outfits and red lipstick, Banks is instantly recognizable with her dark curtain of hair and chalky pallor. The video depicts her looming over a plastic cast of her own face. The singer plays and toys with the replica, and then considers her image (once again) with mirrors and distorted figures.
The song itself remains bold and catchy, with its dark and bouncy tagline of, “Cause I f**k with myself more than anybody else.” Banks brings the sass with the line “I used to care what you think about me,” and then reassures herself with “Cause my love’s so good.”
The song depicts growth in confidence and attitude. The video develops her character from a dark wallflower to a women not to be messed with. As she says herself, “F**kin with the Goddess and you get a little colder.”
