Azealia Banks has finally confessed to previous skin lightening allegations via her bike riding video circulating on Instagram and Facebook.
“What is the difference between getting a nose job and changing your skin color? What’s the difference between wearing hair weave and changing your skin color? Nobody was upset when I was wearing 30-inch weaves and tearing out my edges and doing all types sh*t like that. You guys loved it, but what is the difference? I don’t understand what the difference is…because there really isn’t a difference. And I think that for so many people to say ‘oh you wanting to lighten your skin’…to say that it negates anything I’ve said about the current situation of Blackness in America is ignorant and just stupid. What do body modifications have to do with somebody’s level of intellect? The two don’t correlate. I think it’s petty.”
Banks claimed her reasonings for changing her aesthetics had nothing to do with her intellects and stance on blackness in America. Her point of view was quiet interesting and goes against everything that the Melanin Movements dominating social media stand for. In a time where Black woman all over are striving to embrace their skin complexions and celebrate their shades, Banks comments threw many fans off.
But this isn’t the first run that Banks has had with her skin color on social media. Fans started noticing a significant difference in her complexion after she recently released her new mixtape cover, causing an uproar of comments and concerns on both Twitter and Instagram.
Though her perspective on the issue at hand is quite interesting, at a time when notable figures such as Beyoncé Knowles, Jesse Williams and Kendrick Lamar have been verbally fighting for wholeness within the black community in all aspects, Banks timing for such a confession could not have come at a worse time.
