After the last day of The Governors Ball NYC Music Festival (June 5) was canceled due to severe weather conditions, Vic Mensa took it upon himself to take his performance to Webster Hall. The Chicago rapper not only surprised fans with this last minute show, but he released a new EP last week titled, “There’s A Lot Going On.” Now, he shares with his fans a music video for the title track, pouring out the struggles he went through on his rise to fame.
Standing in front of a white wall, Mensa brings us back to his days when he first moved to Los Angeles, California to start his music career, going back to his mom’s basement in Chicago, and signing a deal with Roc Nation in New York. Through this journey, he describes his battle with drug abuse, a violent relationship, and even thoughts of suicide. Young Mensa drops a lot of information in this heartfelt track, even diving into when he first met Jay-Z and his process with Kanye West, creating the tracks “Wolves,” and “U Mad.”
After his show this past Sunday at Webster Hall, the chi-town native posted on Instagram that he would be celebrating his birthday at the 40/40 club. Also celebrating his ‘Jordan year’ with Mensa, was Jay-Z, fellow Chicago artist, Chance The Rapper, and Queen Bee herself, Beyonce, throwing up that middle finger.
Throughout all of his struggles and overcoming his demons inside, Vic Mensa raps “if you’ve learned one thing from my journey / n***a it’s don’t stop believing.” You can stream Vic Mensa’s EP “There’s A Lot Going On,” on Apple Music and download it on iTunes here.
